5 Reasons Horses actually learn more effectively through short, focused lessons. Here's why:
1. Short Attention Spans – Horses can only focus for so long. Long sessions can lead to mental fatigue and resentment, while short lessons keep them engaged.
2. Better Retention – Learning happens over time. Brief, consistent sessions help horses absorb information without becoming overwhelmed. I'd rather stack five short lessons into an hour than one long one. This allows for more rewards and more retention.
3. Avoiding Resistance – Pushing too long causes boredom and defiance. Stopping on a good note, then repeating the lesson, keeps the horse willing and confident.
4. Physical & Mental Freshness – Fatigue impairs learning. Short sessions prevent exhaustion and keep training productive.
5. The Power of “Soaking” – Horses often process lessons after training. A short, positive lesson today, followed by consistent rewards, leads to progress tomorrow.
Quality beats quantity in horse training. Keeping lessons short builds understanding, trust, and long-term success.
Cheers to your own success. Don Jessop
