The 5 Bs of Leadership by Don Jessop
A Simple Framework for Building Safe, Willing, Confident Horses
The Sequence Matters
To best prepare a horse for learning, leadership, and relationship steps must happen in order:
1 → Begin with Connection
2 → Boundaries
3 → Bonding
4 → Bravery
5 → Basic to Advanced Skills
When training fails, it is always because one of these steps was skipped, rushed, or weakened.
B #1: Begin with Connection
Goal: Awareness, attention, and mental presence. Before training, before expectations, you must have your horse mentally with you.
Connection means:
The horse is aware of you and looks to you
The horse is tuned into your movement and energy. The horse is mentally available to learn.
What Connection Looks Like
Easy to touch and catch
Your horse reaches for you
Ear locked or checking in with you
Why It Matters
Without connection, nothing else sticks.
Connection is the doorway to leadership.
B #2: Boundaries
Goal: Safety, respect, and clear leadership
Boundaries mean your horse, who weighs many times more than you do, will:
Move away from you when asked
Respect your space
Respond left, right, forward, or back
Why It Matters
Keeps you safe
Builds respect
Reinforces leadership
Simple Boundary Checks
✔ Horse backs softly away when asked
✔ Horse yields shoulder and hindquarters easily
✔ Horse does not crowd or push into you
B #3: Bonding
Goal: Trust and emotional connection
Never bond before boundaries.
Why Boundaries Come Before Bonding
Safety:
A horse that does not listen cannot keep you safe, even if he/she likes you.
Reward Timing:
Rewarding after good behavior teaches faster than rewarding first and asking later.
What Bonding Looks Like
Grooming
Finding favorite itchy spots
Touching from nose to tail, top to feet
Calm, relaxed presence
Result: Without bonding, horses can feel like tools or slaves. With bonding, they become partners.
B #4: Bravery
Goal: Build confidence through leadership
Once connection, boundaries, and bonding are solid, you can help a horse face discomfort.
Start Small
New noises, sights, and sensations
Tarps, flags, whip sounds, rope tossing and dragging, saddles, blankets, and more
Obstacles and new environments
Goals:
Stand still when asked
Move forward when asked
Slow down and think instead of reacting
Long-Term Result
Confident horses for any rider and any environment.
B #5: Basic → Advanced Skills
Goal: Build slowly towards performance with a well-prepared horse
"When the student is ready, the teacher appears."
Without the first four Bs, horses often cannot retain training.
Basic Skills Look Like:
Backing
Side passing
Circles and transitions
Sending around obstacles
Yielding body parts:
Head
Shoulder
Hindquarters
Advanced Skills
Longer, balanced canter work
Lead changes
Jumping
Precision maneuvers
Discipline-specific performance work
The Master Key: The Sequence
If training is failing, check:
Did I Begin with a connection?
Did I establish Boundaries?
Did I build real Bonding?
Did I develop Bravery?
Did I rush skills too soon?
