Don Jessop

At first, the newness of an experience is intoxicating. That feeling of needing or wanting more is ever-present. Without that exciting novelty, most people wouldn’t even consider an activity.
But eventually… the novelty wears off. And the only thing left is nuance.
The people who study nuance become masters of their craft. You've seen old couples that have unlocked new levels of peace and happiness. You've seen artists inspire whole new generations of kids to pursue something great. You've seen horse trainers do something that seems impossible. The people who engage in nuance experience great depths. The people who keep chasing novelty move on to something else.
This article is for the passionate participants, the ones who lean into nuance.
Luckily, the horse world has plenty of novelty to keep most riders busy for years. But today, let’s talk about the value of nuance.
As an example, one of the big dreams for many horse owners is the flying lead change. In its novice form, it looks simple: canter right, then left. Boom, done!
But in its nuanced form, it holds universes of tiny, micro-movements. Each one can take months to master.
What are those movements? They’re the same ones you learned early on: a hindquarter yield, a shoulder adjustment, a slight head shift.
Only now, they must be perfect. Applied with precision, at the right time, while holding gait and managing energy.
This is where novelty turns to nuance. And only the most passionate students stick with it. One flying change perfected, can turn to tempi-lead changes applied with an artist flare.
Of course, you could buy a “schoolmaster” horse that already knows how to do flying lead changes. Check it off your list and move on.
But until you pursue the nuance, step by step, laying brick after brick in your foundation, you’ll never experience the depth of communication it requires.
I don’t want to guilt you into being a nuance hunter. It’s okay to be a novelty seeker.
But here’s what I want you to know: there is novelty inside the nuance. There are experiences you simply can’t have unless you go deeper.
Entirely new experiences are waiting there.
Every year I’ve discovered new layers of nuance in horsemanship and teaching. People who know me say I’m different than I was years ago, and they’re right.
I see under the hood now. I’m a mechanic and an artist, always learning more about calm, confidence, precision, and preparation for excellence.
It’s been a wonderful journey. And I highly recommend it.
In case you’re in a tough spot, wondering how to fix a problem or reach the next level, this is the best learning ground you’ll ever stand on.
Where nuance begins is the start of our magical journey.
Don’t back away now. Don’t sell out now.
This is where the real fun begins.
