Don Jessop

Of course, you can ride a hungry horse. You just cannot expect them to behave the same.
Hungry sometimes means hangry.
Horses are creatures of routine, just like you and me. Life shifts, schedules change, and adaptability matters. Still, routine has a powerful influence. If your horse is used to eating at 9:00 and you decide to ride at 9:00 instead, you are not riding your best horse. You are riding one that is distracted, irritable, and thinking about something else.
Good training can compensate. Preparation can help. But you will feel the difference.
Horses need fuel throughout the day. They need forage, water, and steady energy to move and to think. When you time your rides so they have eaten and had a chance to digest, everything improves. The mind softens. The body works better. The conversation becomes clearer.
Food for thought. Yes, the pun is intended.
A horse is either thinking about food or using that food to think clearly. The same is true for us.
Pay attention to timing. Learn your horse’s natural rhythms, not just physically, but biochemically. When you do need to break routine, expect some resistance and meet it with awareness, patience, and a bit of grace.
It is not disobedience. Sometimes, it is just hunger.
Stay safe, ride smart, and have fun dear readers.
