How to Pick the Right Horse Trainer Without the Sales Pitch
Let’s be real for a second. Not every trainer is the right trainer for every person. I can tell you flat out. I’m not the right trainer for everyone. And that’s perfectly fine.
We all have preferences. We all have biases. Some voices resonate. Some don’t. That doesn’t make anyone wrong. It just means fit matters.
So how do you find the right trainer for you? Here are a few key things to consider.
1. Kindness and Progression. You Want Both.
Some trainers are kind but not progressive. They are gentle but maybe you don’t see real results.
Others are progressive but not kind. They will get the job done but the journey feels harsh or stressful.
The sweet spot is a trainer who balances compassion with growth. Someone who cares deeply and moves forward with purpose.
2. Do They Communicate a Clear Plan?
Are you informed and involved or are you just waiting and hoping for results?
A professional trainer should:
Share their goals and timelines
Explain what they are working on and why
Adjust based on your horse’s needs and your expectations
If you are constantly guessing, you are not being coached. You are being sidelined.
3. Do They Include You in the Process?
A trainer should strengthen the bond between you and your horse, not replace it.
Some trainers do great work but shield their methods. They return your horse “trained” but you are left wondering how to keep it going.
The right trainer teaches you alongside your horse so the progress sticks.
4. Competence Matters. For Horses and People.
A great trainer needs two kinds of skill.
✅ Horse competence. Obviously. But not all horsemen are equal.
✅ People competence. Can they teach you without making you feel small?
Add in budget considerations for sure. Trainers range from affordable to “ouch.” My opinion. High competence is worth it at any price point. Because a cheap mistake can cost more than a great investment.
5. Or Maybe You Are More Capable Than You Think
Here is the twist.
Maybe you don’t just need a trainer. Maybe you could be the trainer. Maybe you have the time. You just need the knowledge.
This is where it becomes a bit of a sales pitch.
We can teach you our CB⁴ Formula.
We have built a coaching model designed not to replace you but to equip you.
We teach you how to:
* Connect
* Establish Boundaries
* Build Bonding
* Develop Bravery
* Master Basic Skills
Those are the 4 B’s of leadership. When you win them, you don’t just have a trained horse. You have a partnership.
With the right coaching, you can become the leader your horse already hopes you will be.
Final Thought
You may love our approach or not. Either way, no hard feelings.
There are many excellent trainers out there. We don’t claim to be better than the best. We simply claim to be:
Unique. Patient. Persistent. Playful. And permission based.
So, if that resonates, I invite you to explore our private coaching.
