Don Jessop

Here’s the truth: horses do not usually care where they poop. Arena, trail, or right in the middle of a Fourth of July parade, it is all fair game. To them, it is just Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the rider panics, wishing the ground would swallow them whole. But forcing your horse to keep moving mid-poop only makes things worse. Imagine someone rushing you out of a public restroom, you would not thank them.
Here is the twist. A good poop is a good sign. Some horses cannot relax enough to poop around people. So, when they finally do, it means they are letting down, feeling safe, and trusting you. Some horses will not load in the trailer until they poop, it is their way of releasing tension. And some, when stressed, have the opposite problem, nervous diarrhea. So when you get a healthy, solid, public poop, it is actually worth celebrating.
So, laugh. Smile. Wave to the crowd. Toss out a joke like, “Well, at least somebody is relaxed!” Then let your horse finish, because pretending it did not happen can feel impossible.
Remember, horses poop. In public. And when they do it comfortably, it is not just normal, it is a good sign in your relationship.
