Guilt Within Reason

Don Jessop

Have you ever felt guilty for not riding or working/playing with your horses?

If you feel guilty, I get it. I've been there. Let me shine a little light on the horse's experience so you can decide just how guilty you should feel, or not.

Number 1. If your horse lives in open spaces with plenty of food, shelter, and friends, relax, he's happier than you think. You can still feel guilty for not pursuing your goals if you want, but don't feel guilty about your horse. He's got what he needs naturally.

Number 2. If you feel like your instructor has goals for you, and your not following through, that's a you thing. Guilt is not your enemy here. Guilt can motivate. Shame, however, can cause a downward spiral. Stay sharp enough to let bad days pass and focus on today for tomorrow. Don't dwell on what you didn't achieve. That just leads to shame.

Number 3. If your horse is stuck in a small space, get out there. Feel guilty, by all means, until you're acting, moving, shaking up your routines. Your horse needs daily walking and some kind of mental stimulus to maintain their health. It's true they can adapt to living in cages by simply giving up. But it's not ethical or kind. You don't have to ride. Just get out there and give some love.

Food for thought my fine horse loving friends.
Keep your guilt within reason. Don't let it paralyze you, but certainly don't forget about your four legged partners out there.
