Don Jessop

Growing up in Montana offered mountains of exploration. Literally. I could escape to the Bitterroot Range’s rocky canyons and cliff walls for an afternoon, a day, even a week, and get completely lost in the scenery, the fishing, the riding, and the rugged beauty of it all.
Many mountain lakes proved to be epic nature baths and fishing destinations. Glacier-capped mountaintops, lasting all through the summer, would pique my imagination, calling me to climb and taste the watery springs, touch the snow line, and even practice snow angels in July.
I could stand on the top of any mountain and see for hundreds of miles in any direction, looking past mountains and valleys rivaling the beauty of Yellowstone, Glacier, and Yosemite National Parks.
And none of this was reachable by paved roads. In fact, only bumpy roads led to bumpy trails that led to magical experiences.
How similar is our horse experience? How often do we expect great things at the end of a paved road? It is true, there are some great things. Buildings, structures, art, commerce, and more. But there is nothing there that compares to nature. The best things are always at the end of a bumpy road.
At this point, I hope you catch my double meaning. The metaphor of hardship leading to beauty. The necessary bumps, dust, and chaos that lead to success and joy. If you could drive on pavement to the lakes I describe, you could never experience the same depth of joy, meaning, accomplishment, and freedom.
If you are struggling with your horse, if the road feels bumpy, stay the course, but also pause. Notice you are traversing nature. A horse is nature’s finest. Look around. This bumpy path is not too shabby. It is kind of beautiful too. And something magical is down this path.
Sometimes we can be disheartened by a horse that does not comply, does not learn as quickly, or is not “trained.” But take heart knowing the path you are on is bumpy, and bumpy paths lead to the best places.
