Don Jessop

One, just because.
Two, why not?
Ok, those reasons don't hold much water. (Smug smile)
There are some legitimate reasons to consider a new or different horse. Number one, your current horse may be aging out or simply not fit for your goals.
It's true, your goals aren't the most important things on the planet. Sometimes taking care of a horse is more important regardless of your goals. But if you are considering riding on trails with friends or tackling a new level of competence in a certain field, you'll need a horse that's capable. It's okay to want a new horse, even acquire a new horse, so long as you plan to ensure your current horse lives a good life.
You know, not everyone wants to compete or trail ride. Some people choose education as a path of enrichment. I certainly did. In that case, a wild horse or project horse is exciting to me. It can be for you too. The path of education, mapping plans and witnessing the growth of confidence and competence is all brilliant fun.
So, you can get a new horse to enjoy your education or a new horse to enjoy recreation. Both are valid reasons. Now the only question to consider is why not?
Finances, time, resources, facilities — all good points to consider. If you've got 'em, and you feel ready to acquire a new partner, go for it! If you don't have it lined out but still want to engage with a new horse, there are people that have horses, that care for them, that want help giving time to their horses. There are abundant opportunities, especially for someone who's willing to dive into their education, willing to be natural and kind and progressive.
To sum up, life is short, ride a fast horse!
Sincerely, Don
